A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR THE NEW CONSUMER

Cannabis Facts

  • In 2003, Canada became the first country in the world to legalize medical cannabis. As of October 17th, 2018 Canada Legalized adult-use cannabis.
  • Nearly 70% of Canadians either support or somewhat support cannabis legalization, according to a 2016 Nanos survey.
  • Blue Dream and Pink Kush were the most popular strains on Leafly in Canada in 2017.
  • In 2017, Canadians spent an estimated $5.7 billion on Cannabis, 90% of which was for adult-use purposes.
  • Plenty of people have gotten "too high," but cannabis has never caused a fatal overdose. This is due to that a human spinal cord does not have cannabis receptors the same as for opiates. Taking too much cannabis will never shut down your respiratory system the same as pharmaceutical drugs or alcohol can.

Cannabis Science

CANNABINOIDS are chemical compounds in cannabis that interact with receptors in the brain and body to produce an array of effects. Two of the most popular cannabinoids are THC and CBD.

THC: Common effects can include euphoria, relaxation, and short-term memory impairment.

CBD: Non-intoxicating compound that can decrease some of THC's effects. May ease anxiety, inflammation, and pain.

-----------------------

TERPENES give each cannabis strain a distinct aroma and flavor profile. They also likely contribute to the plant's medical and psychoactive effects. Some of the these terpenes are:

a-Pinene is known to counteract some of THC's memory-impairing effects. It's found in strains like Blue Dream and Purple Kush.

B-Caryophyllene contributes to the peppery aroma of spicy strains like Death Star, Secret Recipe, and Candyland.

Myrcene is believed to accentuate some of THC's effects. It's found in strains like Cheese and Afgooey.

Limonene is abundant in strains like Hindu Kush, Lemon G, and Romulan. It's believed to have mood-enhancing and antibacterial properties.

Linalool has the potential to lower stress levels and fight inflammation. It's found in strains like Sour Kush and Liberty Haze.

Terpinolene has a fresh, herbal aroma. It's present in floral strains like Snowcap, Sensi Star, and Dutch Treat.

TOPICALS

Topicals are cannabis-infused creams, lotions, and balms that are absorbed through the skin for localized effects. Topicals are not typically considered intoxicating.

Responsible Consumption

Start Small

You can always add more cannabis, but once consumed, it will take a few hours for the effects to pass.

Go Slow

Inhaled cannabis can take a few minutes to fully kick in, and edibles can take up to 2 hours. When in doubt, wait before taking more.

Be Patient

Enjoy the experience! If you think you've had a bit too much and you're feeling the effects too strongly, chew on some black peppercorn, have some water, and remember these feelings will pass.

Products that are lower in THC and higher in CBD are great choices for those new to cannabis.

Remember

Never give cannabis to children.

Never drive under the influence of cannabis.

The Cannabis Act

The Cannabis Act passed on June 20th, 2018. Legal Cannabis is proposed to be Legal as of October 17th, 2018. Adults who are 19+ will be able to:

Share up to 30 grams of legal cannabis with other adults in Canada.

Purchase cannabis and cannabis oil from a licensed retailer in any province.

Grow up to 4 plants per household, each up to 1 meter high. Homegrown cannabis can be smoked, vaped, turned into tincture, or used to make cannabis infused edibles, but it cannot be sold or used to make flammable-solvent-based concentrates. (Key fact: None of this applies in Quebec or Manitoba, where growing cannabis at home is prohibited.)

What are the Equivalents?

The government has specified that one gram of dried cannabis is equivalent to:

  • 5 grams of fresh cannabis,
  • 15 grams of edible product,
  • 70 grams of liquid product,
  • 0.25 grams of concentrates (solid or liquid), or
  • 1 cannabis plant seed.

CBD Education

WHAT IS CBD?

CannabidiolCBD—is a cannabis compound that has significant medical benefits, but does not make people feel “stoned” and can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC. The fact that CBD-rich cannabis is non-psychoactive or less psychoactive than THC-dominant strains makes it an appealing option for patients looking for relief from inflammationpainanxietypsychosisseizures, spasms, and other conditions without disconcerting feelings of lethargy or dysphoria.
